The City of Charlotte and the CMPD agreed to re-evaluate their policies  when responding to protests. The settlement changes include the ban on the use of chemical weapons to kettle protesters and responsibility for CMPD to clearly community crowd dispersal orders in both English and Spanish.

2020 Charlotte Protest for George Floyd Murder

On June 2, 2020 Protesters in the City of Charlotte took to the Uptown area to protest against the murder of George Floyd by former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin. According to the facts presented in the civil rights lawsuit, CMPD devised a plan to block all exits for protesters and proceeded to attack the protesters with both tear gas and rubber bullets. The civil rights lawsuit included reports and video from protesters to document the misconduct by the CMPD Police.
